Who is hum?

We are descendants of people from the Indian subcontinent, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. We are intelligent, South Asian American twentysomethings who have embraced the best of two cultures. We have grown up in the United States with open minds and new ideas. We are from various religious, economic and regional backgrounds, but we share one common goal: to be heard.

hum is the alternative to South Asian publications that gloss over topics for "the youth." hum focuses on South Asian American stories, doubts, inspirations, difficulties and successes.

hum is your voice. Read it, participate, debate, and try to resolve.

hum's history

hum got its name from the Hindi/Urdu word which means "us." The magazine was started in 1993 by Shalini Malhotra, who's only 24 and probably far too young for all this money, fame and glory (not!).

All hum contributors are volunteers, and submissions are unpaid. Graphic design and layout is done with the gracious help of Gigantic Publishing and MIGHT magazine, another 'zine out of San Francisco's publishing ghetto. Special thanks to Dave & Dave.

hum online was created by Manish Vij, with the constant support and encouragement of Shalini, the editor, and Shashank Parasnis (Mr. DesiNet).
