1994 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals

Note: data retrieved follows this introduction
This information below is derived from the 1994 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals and is maintained in the WCMC Species Database. The species listed are those considered to be globally threatened as of late 1993 according to the IUCN status categories. A revised category system with more explicit and quantitative entities will be in place for the next edition. Assessments are made primarily by the IUCN/SSC Specialist Groups. It is important to recognise that the vast majority of species have never been systematically assessed. Only the birds have been comprehensively analysed (a second world listing by Birdlife International is expected in late 1994) and about half of the world mammals. All other groups are less completely known. The published list includes introductory text, a discussion of the new category system, tables and additional listings of extinct species and threatened subspecies.
